Review
DuVernet’s manual covers the legal aspects of photography, for both
the Canadian and the American photojournalist. It was originally
published in 1986 in 150 pages; it has now been updated and extended.
Its table of contents suggests more: what you can and cannot photograph
(currency, stamps, stocks, official secret documents, types of
buildings, judicial proceedings, people) are described under separate
sections for Canada and the U.S. The book defines obscene pictures and
discusses the use of photographs for advertisements and news. Also
covered are harassment and the right to privacy, some uses of release
forms, copyrights, and professional standards. Each chapter is
relatively short and self-contained, with smaller sections within;
consequently, there is no index. But I would have liked some
bibliographic references to further readings.
