Review

Although both the title and the cover, which features an illustration of
David Suzuki, are rather misleading as to the actual author of this
book, Laura Suzuki and Peter Cook have assembled an interesting array of
information concerning diet, nutrition, and the digestive system.

Composed in a question-and-answer format with a full-page cartoon to
illustrate every fact, this is a book that one can flip through or open
to any page; it does not demand to be read from cover to cover. The
simple black-and-white cartoons are sure to amuse children. The facts
are brief and easily understood; some are even useful.

The vocabulary of the text leaves a little to be desired, being rather
too simplistic at times. It seems fair to expect that if the words
“myoglobin” and “bilirubin” can be used and explained in this
book, then words other than euphemisms can be used to describe bodily
functions. Surely an attempt to expand a child’s vocabulary would not
be detrimental in a book intended to educate.

Although the book is a times simply revolting, this is sure to delight
most children. Parents, on the other hand, may not be so enthralled.

Refreshingly, the book is printed on recycled paper.
