Review

People who dine alone deserve the same good food and service customarily
provided for company. More people than ever before live alone, and there
is an increased need for and interest in the sort of advice provided in
Margot Oliver’s Good Food for One.

Oliver writes of a situation with which she herself is familiar,
providing suggestions for appropriate baking dishes, casseroles, and
pots; what to purchase in quantity and what to acquire in smaller
amounts (for example, she lists herbs and spices that lose their flavor
in storage); serving sizes; and what to do with leftovers.

The recipes are listed under the sections “Main Dishes,”
“Soups,” “Vegetables, Pasta and Rice,” “Salads and
Dressings,” “Breads and Sandwiches,” “Sweets,” and “Snacks,
Sips and Sauces.” Measurements for the recipes are in imperial units
only, although metric equivalents are provided for the cooking and
baking utensils suggested. “Lay-flat” [sic] binding will keep the
paperback book open during kitchen use.
