Review
The best meals many people ever eat, and the ones hardest to match in
later years, are those prepared and served by their mothers. This
collection of real “home cooking,” by a down-to-earth Mom who
remembers what her own children loved best, is full of the richly
satisfying meals kids hurry home for, composed of readily available
ingredients, and tending to an ease and simplicity of preparation
calculated to please the busy chef with little time to spend on lavish
or time-consuming cookery.
The recipes are organized in chapters: “Appetizers and Snacks,”
“Soups,” “Salads and Dressings,” “Small Meals,”
“Entrées,” “Vegetables,” “Breads and Rolls,” “Quick
Breads,” “Bars and Squares,” “Cookies,” “Cakes,”
“Pies,” and “Desserts.” Also included are a “Cooktionary”
(definitions of cooking terminology) and sections on “Tests for
Doneness,” “Meal Planning,” “Putting It All Together,” and
“Setting the Table.”
While the recipes are on the traditional side featuring such old
favorites as Tuna Casserole, Macaroni and Cheese, and Bangers and Mash,
an informed interest in calories and the careful avoidance of
unnecessary fat strike a welcome modern note, as do directions that make
use of the food processor, blender, and microwave oven. Measurements are
provided in both metric and imperial units, and there are a few
attractive color plates.
