Review

Dagan’s book resembles the detailed, illustrated catalogues that
accompany art exhibits. His subject is theatrical puppets and masks from
Africa.

Although many people were responsible for this publication, Dagan is
given credit for photography as well as for creating the book. The book
fails to list contributors’ credentials, leaving readers to judge it
solely on its content and format.

The book’s content includes the origin and history of many kinds of
puppets, from finger to string to shadow. Masks from many rituals and
dance ceremonies are also included. Unfortunately, Dagan chose to extend
his coverage to toys and sculpture; although he does justify their
inclusion, it detracts from the book’s main subject.

Aside from the attractive colored cover, the book’s format is very
drab, with no color photographs to bring out the beauty of the masks and
puppets. Despite the drawback of having only black-and-white
photographs, and a lengthy and sometimes-unfocused text, this book may
appeal to readers in special libraries, particularly those of museums
and art galleries.
