Review

This little book, with its more than 30 full-color photographs, is
dedicated to the spectacular surroundings of the Banff area. It
represents the perfect souvenir for the budget-minded visitor to the
region or the armchair traveller with an interest in the area. The many
mainly full-page color photographs are by Sherman Hines, one of
Canada’s most outstanding and experienced outdoors and nature
photographers. His selections taken throughout the seasons (some of the
winter scenes are especially impressive) reflect Hines’s dedication to
his craft and his love of the outdoors. Both must come very easily in
such surroundings.

Brief captions identify the locale of the almost uniformly gorgeous
succession of pictures. No further words—save a brief foreword by
Hines—distract the viewer from the photographs.

The pamphlet is a delightful pictorial homage to the Canadian version
of an earthly paradise. However, for those not familiar with the Banff
area (and especially for anyone contemplating a visit), a map
identifying some of the locations where the photographs were taken would
have been a useful orientation aid to enable others to at least visually
match Hines’s view of this grandiose paradise with its towering peaks,
glorious mountain lakes, and dark forests.
