Review

Reading this book is much like listening to one’s grandfather tell
stories of his young days, which means that it fulfills its purpose
well. The tales are varied, covering everything from bush flying and
fishing to the story of the “undisputed world champion of catching the
Langdale ferry from Pender Harbour in forty-seven minutes in a 1973
Volvo with no brakes and eight cases of books in the back.” All are
most readable, and while the book’s historical scope is modest, its
portrayal of life in the area is genuine.
