Review

Woman at Mile Zero is a collection of prose poems by British Columbia
writer Linda Rogers. Her fourth published collection of poems, the book
is a dream sequence, written while Rogers was living at Mile Zero of the
Trans-Canada Highway, in Victoria, B.C.

The 69 stream-of-consciousness poems here cover a wide range of
subjects and emotions. Many of the individual poems are compelling in
their images. One particularly evocative poem, “Devouring,” uses
language, image, and sense to create a remarkable impression of a kiss
as a predatory act. Unfortunately, many other poems (for example,
“Hung Up”) start well, only to dissipate their energy. Too often,
the poems seem coded, almost pretentious, and self-indulgent.
