Review

This short, glossy, pocket-sized guide to restaurants in 26 locations
across Canada may be useful to the frequent traveler (especially in
central Canada) who likes to dine well and has lots of money to spend.
Interestingly, the book admits to no direct authorship, which leads one
to wonder if the reviews are in fact promotional material put out by the
restaurants themselves. A few pages of advertising at the front and back
of the book add to its promotional feel.

This caveat aside, the reviews provide good information about the style
of cooking, the ambience, and the average cost of dinner for two, with
additional symbols indicating such variables as dress code, access,
outdoor dining, live entertainment, and so on. Each of the one-page
reviews includes photos of the dining area, the hosts, and sometimes the
chef; helpful hints on location are given—not just a street address.
The reviews are heavily weighted toward central Canada. The western
provinces and the Maritimes are given short shrift, with only one or two
reviews each. While Vancouver merits only nine reviews, Toronto and
Montreal merit 21 and 25, respectively.
