Review

This handy manual was compiled by a team of writers from Deloitte and
Touche, founded more than 130 years ago and one of the largest firms of
chartered accountants and management consultants in Canada. The
information is not intended as a substitute for professional advice, but
is offered as a general guide to understanding the main tax provisions
and to minimizing the tax burden. The book reflects the law and
legislative proposals to November 1995.

The sections cover general tax planning and goals, income and deduction
basics, business income, income deferral, income splitting, personal tax
credits, saving for retirement, investing for the future, owner-managed
private companies, tax aspects of automobiles, claiming your GST rebate,
and estate planning.

The text is clear and reasonably thorough. Boldface type is used to
draw attention to major points. Structure and layout are used to good
effect. How to Reduce the Tax You Pay is a competent handbook that
should help a bewildered taxpayer fill out his or her own tax forms, or
at least require minimal professional help.
