Review

As the author points out, “This book was written to support teachers
in providing healthy integration for ESL students in their classroom,
and to support these learners in their struggles to feel like and be
more successful during their time in classrooms.” While geared to
younger children, In Our Classrooms can benefit other age groups,
depending on the level of English understood. The chapters centre on
background in language learning, programs for primary teachers, core
subject programs, working with newcomers, and assessment and reporting.

While In Our Classrooms is rich in reproducible blackline masters,
starting points, and checklists, and provides teachers with helpful
plans and guidance, there is little analysis of ESL. As such, this
excellent book is best used as a guide and supplementary source for ESL
teachers.
