Review

At the centre of this eloquent, intense memoir is a brutal event: the
kidnapping and murder of the author’s sister. But Lorie Miseck, an
accomplished poet, focuses her attention not on the events of that cold
Edmonton winter day, but rather on the emotional fallout. A Promise of
Salt is a unflinching look at a life—in this case, the
author’s—damaged by tragedy. The insights the book provides makes it
essential reading not just for those dealing with grief, but for the
people around them who want to offer comfort but have difficulty finding
the right words.
