Review
Destination Fundy Trail New Brunswick is essentially a photographic
study featuring the work of two professionals. But any visitors to the
“picture province” will benefit from a close perusal of the six-page
introduction prepared by two ground-breaking naturalists, Dr. Mary Majka
and David Christie. Majka and Christie are almost single-handedly
responsible for the creation of a world-recognized nature preserve,
located at Mary’s Point at the head of the Bay of Fundy, where
semi-palmated sandpipers gather by the hundreds of thousands each year
during their annual migration to feed on the mud flats. Their
introduction provides as neat a summary of Fundy’s ecology, history,
and economy as one is likely to find anywhere in print: the phenomenal
tides, the visiting whales, the traditional fishery, the salmon
aquaculture, the many must-sees for tourists—all are succinctly
covered.
Readers who view the superb photographs will likely be discouraged from
ever taking their own. The short captions accurately locate each shot
and provide additional information on the flora and fauna. This book is
a gem.
