Review

John Sylvester recently won Canada’s Northern Lights Awards for
Excellence in Travel Journalism and Photography. His subjects are mainly
the people and places of Atlantic Canada. His photographic essay From
Red Clay and Salt Water: Prince Edward Island and Its People (1994) was
highly acclaimed. Sylvester has lived in Prince Edward Island since
1982.

Island Light features a collection of stunning images capturing the
changing cycle of seasons in rural Prince Edward Island. The work
clearly shows an artist who is fascinated by “Island light.” Brief
passages accompanying the photos additionally convey Sylvester’s deep
love for the “emerald isle, set in a silver sea.” The book is to be
recommended to all visitors to the Island (some quarter of a million
annually). It will be especially enjoyed by Islanders as a keepsake of a
still largely unspoiled rural land.
