Review

For those seeking information about bed-and-breakfast accommodations in
Ontario, The Best Places is well worth consulting, because the author
stayed at each establishment listed and has written the B&B descriptions
from a “guest’s” rather than a “host’s” perspective.
Furthermore, Higgins makes it clear that her selection was in no way
influenced by the B&B owners.

Each entry, which features a charming line drawing of the
establishment, includes the name and address of the hosts, season(s) of
operation, rates, restrictions, and the type of breakfast offered. This
is followed by several paragraphs in which the author describes meeting
her hosts, her stay, features of the house, and what her breakfast was
like. The guide also features a section on “B&B etiquette” that
provides useful tips on avoiding problems between guests and hosts.

The bulk of the author’s B&B choices are in southern Ontario—about
half in the southwestern and Golden Horseshoe regions. Travelers looking
for good bed-and-breakfast accommodation, particularly in southern
Ontario, will be well served by this guide.
