Review

This third edition of Hiking on the Edge, which appears in a larger
format than earlier editions, offers up-to-date information and a
revised section on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. Both trails, which
stretch a combined 75 kilometres along the outer coast of Vancouver
Island, attract hikers from all over the world. The area’s natural
history and scenery alone serve as incentives to experience life where
“the forest meets the ocean.”

Photographer David Nunuk spent some two years hiking these trails,
taking more than 8000 shots. The rugged beauty of the landscape, ancient
trees, and rich sea life are all showcased in his beautifully composed
photos. Ian Gill’s well-written text is a blend of Native tales and
European settler history with information on access and conditions for
the modern hiker. It even includes notes on Native words and language.

Hiking on the Edge is a fine resource that is sure to inspire day
hikers to take the next step and experience overnight trekking in this
must-visit region of Canada. Because the guide is aimed at veteran
hikers, beginners should also consult other practical reference guides
for these trails.
